I’m sure we’ve all experienced being bored by ourselves when people like our friends or family are busy. Feeling like you have absolutely nothing to do, and maybe feeling like a good day, no matter what the weather is, is going to waste.
Something you might not think about is doing something just by yourself. You might think it sounds a little weird and maybe even boring, but just think about it a little!
A bit of a hard truth is that you are the only person who will be with you every single minute of every day from the beginning to the end. With that being said, it’s so important, and actually so much fun, to really get to know that person the best you can.
What I mean by “getting to know that person,” as in you, is that often in the alone time you spend you might just be laying down in bed watching a movie or doing things like cleaning your room, doing homework, chores, etc.
But something that I believe is so important and make sure to tell everyone I can, including myself, is that you, as an individual, outside of who you spend time with, are so much more interesting than you think. You have so many amazing qualities that you might not even know exist until you spend time with yourself.

Another reason to learn how to enjoy your own company besides the art of genuinely just getting to know yourself is that it’s a really refreshing thing to do. Sometimes you just simply need a break. As simple as that. Whether it’s from school, work, friends, family, the house, or just anything, you might just need a break.
Solo Activities
Taking yourself on solo dates. You might be thinking, “But I can’t drive..” Whether you can or can’t, that’s no big deal at all. It doesn’t have to be anything super far away to where you couldn’t walk, bike, etc.
This solo date could be such a big variety of things. You could go to a nearby ice cream shop and sit outside to get a breath of fresh air alone, with something sweet (or salty, for all the pistachio and salted caramel lovers!) and just have some time to think.
Another solo activity/date you could take yourself on is a sunrise/sunset/mid-day picnic. Grab a larger blanket or something that you can sit in the grass on, and pack some snacks from home. For example: sandwiches, fruit, chips, popsicles, etc). As far as the destination goes, that’s totally up to you! If there’s any sort of open field nearby, or if you know a place with water around it that has places you can sit, it works perfectly. Really just anywhere you know is peaceful and quiet!
Moving on, going to a museum/art gallery or anything of that sort by yourself. There’s a very popular scene from a show I’m sure everyone is familiar with, which is The Summer I Turned Pretty where Belly and Conrad are in a museum together with their headphones in. But for the most part in this scene, Belly is by herself just observing the beauty of the art around her.
If you’re an observer at heart, this could be a great option for you!
Lastly, going for a solo hike. Dress for the weather, pack some water and snacks, and go to some place to enjoy the beauty of the world. This activity doubles as cardio and a good workout, as well as fresh air and sight-seeing. Your hike doesn’t have to be a crazy, six mile, uphill, torture day. (Because I know that’s what I think of when someone mentions going for a hike). But not all hikes are like this at all! To assure you’re going on a hike that you’ll enjoy, do some research! Local or not, there’s beauty all around you no matter where you are.
With all of this being said, I hope this encourages you to explore the person you truly are aside from the things you define yourself by. You are so much more interesting as an individual than you might think, and you should take every opportunity you can to explore and get to know that person!
