Releasing his debut album in 2011, J. Cole gained recognition, and his music stuck with people because of
his introspective and meaningful lyrics. J. Cole was born in a military base in Germany and grew up in North Carolina. He moved to a trailer park following his parents’ divorce and found himself interested in hip-hop around twelve years old, when he started writing rhymes in notebooks. When he was fifteen, his mother bought him a drum machine so he could make rhythms to rap over. His musical style and flow were influenced by Tupac, Nas, Jay- Z. Eminem, Andre 3000, and Lil Wayne.
On February 6th, 2026, J. Cole released his seventh and final studio album titled The Fall-Off. He announced that he will be going on a world tour and he will be performing in Seattle on August 25th.
Cole always finds a way to connect with his fans more so than other rappers at his level. While promoting his new album, J. Cole has been on the road in his Honda Civic, selling CDs of his new album for his “Trunk Sale” tour. His announcement of the Trunk Sale Tour was on X, and he talked about selling albums as a teen and expressed the desire to do the same with his own album, and said, “Cop a CD from me or just show love. I truly appreciate all the love
and reaction to the music.” Throughout his Trunk Sale Tour, he has gone to campuses, malls, and invited fans into his car to listen and drive around with him. This tour adds to his already humble and authentic image, and it is heartwarming to see him connect with his fans.
In 2021, Cole dropped a mini-documentary while fans were waiting for his next album, “The
Off-Season.” In the documentary, he talks about many different topics, but the main focus seemed to be how he struggles with self-doubt. He spoke about how taking a break affected his creative flow. “When you don’t write for a while, you wait around for the inspiration. That’s the thing I had to cut out. You can wait forever, and nothing’ll ever come.” He explains how, instead of overthinking each line, scratching it and starting from the beginning, you keep writing and “trust that it’ll lead you to the second line and to the third.” Self-doubt and overthinking is something that everyone faces, but like J. Cole says, you have to learn to show up in spite of it.
