Cinematography is the art and science of using technical and creative choices to tell a visual story by capturing moving images. Cinematographers are responsible for a film’s visual look.
One might not notice, but it is used in every movie ever made. Some movies prioritize it more than others. Especially the two we will be deep diving into today, as well as notable mentions for others profoundly known for their excellent use of cinematography. Lets get started!
Up first on the chopping block is a timeless classic. A beautiful period piece with a soundtrack still performed to this day. The Sound of Music.
Most people have watched or at least heard some form of the musical The Sound of Music. One of the most iconic scenes in cinematic history is the gorgeous shots in the films opening sequence. It features a gorgeous Julie Andrews dancing upon the epic and beautiful Austrian hills. This opening is very important to the movie as it gives us a wide glimpse of the setting and scenery of the movie.

Our second example of cinematography is from a stellar movie called, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.
Now this movie as opposed to the sound of music is not as popular. The secret life of Walter Mitty follows Walter Mitty (Ben Stiller), an employee at life magazine, passes his long boring day at work developing photos for the publication. To escape his monotonous life he constantly day dreams about wild adventures or absurd things happing to him. However, he gets a chance to have a real adventure when Life’s new owners send him on a mission across different countries to obtain the perfect photo for the final print issue.
We get to experience this adventure alongside Walter from the surreal camera shots we get from each scene while Walter is on his journey.
