If you scroll down TikTok or walk down the hallway lately, you probably know something surprising: fashion looks a lot like it did before most of us were born, from baggy jeans of the ’90s to
Hollister crop tops.
Interestingly, this trend isn’t about dressing exactly like our parents or grandparents did; teens are mixing 2000s style with modern pieces, such as pairing oversized denim with sneakers, or layering classic sweaters over graphic tees. It’s not just the look; it’s a way of sitting in the world. Real fast fashion makes everyone dress the same. Now, most people get their clothes through thrift shopping. You can find cute vintage clothes for cheap, and the outfits consist of baggy shorts, jeans, t-shirts, tank tops, and hoodies. You can go there and spend less than
$50 on a whole new wardrobe. I definitely believe that TikTok heavily influenced this idea of going thrifting.
But once was a place for people who could not afford new clothes and could get clothes for cheap. It is now a place for teenagers to buy clothes and sell on Depop and Poshmark; because of that, prices have been driven up.
TikTok definitely plays a big part when it comes to fashion or when it comes to what to like next, whether it be music, fashion, or even food. When you’re in high school, you’re impacted by people around you much harder, or even by the people you listen to.
Style nowadays can definitely be influenced by popular artists like Tyler the Creator, Steve Lacey, Daniel Caesar chaperone Billie Eilish, Sabrina Carpenter, Olivia Rodrigo, Kendrick Lamar, and other popular artists right now
Even stores are bringing back their retro clothing, like Hollister brought back their 2000s collection, which included tight sweaters and tight-fitting shirts with little stripes. which was commonly worn 20 years ago.
Now, why, 20 years late, are people wearing these clothes? Boys are wearing baggy jeans in oversized shirts, and dirty old basketball sneakers. Girls are reverting to tight little sweaters and skinny jeans. I believe that artists right now, especially popular rappers, are reverting to those styles, and young people are heavily influenced by it.
High schoolers now are at that age where their parents are millennials, so another thing to be considered is that we are that age where we’re able to go back and really appreciate music from that time, and insert it into our style a decade later.
I think no matter what you wear you should be able to express yourself and I think fashion is the best way to express the things you like whether it be a banty or even a t-shirt referencing your favorite show I really think it shows people by what you wear even how you do your hair on what you like and who you are as a person and I think as people we should all find our own Styles and even our own hairdo to really show the inner you!
