Vegan meat alternatives have become more popular in recent years as more people look for healthier and environmentally friendly food choices. Many companies now create plant based products that taste and feel similar to real meat. Among the many options available, three of the best vegan meats alternatives are tofu, tempeh, and saitan.
Tofu is one of the most common vegan protein sources. It is made from soybeans and has been used in cooking for centuries. Tofu is popular because it easily absorbs the flavors of sauces and seasonings. It can be grilled, fried, backed or added to soups and stir fries. Tofu is rich in protein, calcium, and iron, making it a healthy replacement for meat.
Another excellent vegan meat alternative is tempeh, like tofu, tempeh is made from soybeans, but it is fermented, giving it a firmer texture and has a nutty flavor, tempeh contains high amounts of protein, fiber, and vitamins. Many people enjoy using it in sandwiches, tacos, and salads because it has a hearty texture similar to chicken or beef. The fermentation process also provides beneficial probiotics that support digestion.
Seitan is another popular vegan meat substitute. Unlike tofu and tempeh, seitan is made from wheat gluten, which gives it a chewy and dense texture that is similar to the texture of chicken. Because of seitan’s texture, it is often used in dishes like vegan chicken, steak, or stir fry. It is very high in protein and easily absorbs flavor. I personally tried a recipe for seitan and used the wash method, this method basically takes regular all purpose flour and washes all the starches out so you are then left with only the gluten to turn into seitan. I chose to sauteed mine in a sweet and spicy chili sauce, I honestly didn’t have super high hopes but when I tasted the final product I was truly shocked. It tasted like sweet and spicy chicken! Next time I make it, because I will be making it again, I’ll add more vegan chicken bouillon because I didn’t add enough the first time to give it some extra flavor.
Overall, I haven’t tried all of these vegan meat alternatives so I can’t fully speak on their behalf but I hope this article inspires you to step out of your food comfort zone and try new things like I did. Oftentimes vegan food gets a bad rep, but once you actually start trying stuff and learning new recipes and ways to cook different things, you might realize vegan food can be just as good as its counterpart.
