What is academic pressure?
Academic pressure is the chronic stress, anxiety, and emotional, physical, or mental strain students experience from high, often relentless expectations to excel academically.
High school can already be challenging with the social pressures and sports, then, to add academic pressure, which feels like the worst of all of them, but it’s not. There are ways to support yourself and others under academic pressure.
Where can this stress come from?
Academic pressure is very commonly seen in high school students and student athletes. People putting this pressure on our minds can sometimes be ourselves, parents, and teachers.
Signs of academic pressure
Sometimes, without even realizing it, we start to burn out from the chronic stress; suffer from sleep deprivation from either thinking about school work, or actually doing it; and develop a fear of failure, mostly due to not meeting standards or disappointing someone. Those are all signs of academic pressure.
Coping Strategies
Although sometimes academic stress is unavoidable, there are always ways to cope and lessen the chronic stress. Coping strategies include prioritizing time management, organizing study times, and using class time wisely.
Setting achievable goals are a must. Don’t limit yourself, but be realistic.
Seeking support can look like talking to a counselor, friend, or family member about ways to get help on homework, mental health, or how to ease your stress while juggling all academic and social life.
Prioritizing self-care is also important. It can look like giving yourself a break sometimes and making sure you’re getting a healthy amount of sleep.
Conclusion
Academic pressure is a real and valid issue. If you feel like these symptoms apply to you, seek support and take the coping strategies into account to see if they work for you.
