Last Monday, on September 15th, Hispanic Heritage Month began. Here’s almost everything you need to know!
Hispanic Heritage Month is a vibrant celebration that takes place each year from September 15th to October 15th. It’s a time dedicated to the rich and diverse cultures, histories, and contributions of Hispanic Americans to the United States. The observance began in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon B. Johnson and was later expanded to a month-long celebration in 1988.
The timing of Hispanic Heritage Month is significant, as it coincides with the anniversaries of independence for several Latin American countries. Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua all celebrate their independence on September 15th, followed by Mexico on September 16th and Chile on September 18th. This period offers an opportunity to reflect on the unique heritage and experiences of people with Hispanic roots.
During this month, communities across the nation come together to honor the achievements of Hispanic Americans in various fields, including arts, science, sports, literature, and politics. It’s a time to learn about the traditions, music, dance, and cuisine that have enriched American society. Hispanic Heritage Month serves as a reminder of the importance of diversity and inclusion. And the ongoing need to promote understanding and appreciation for all cultures.
I was able to interview a couple of people from the Hispanic community, and this is what they had to say….
Brian Franco said that the meaning of Hispanic Heritage Month to him is honor. Honor in his lineage of Colombian descent. Some of the ways he likes to celebrate are eating Hispanic cuisines and, in his words, “spending time with family at home.”
Thomas Manuel Jr. says, “It means the world to me,” highlighting his pride in being part of the Hispanic community and his Guatemalan descent. When asked how he celebrates, he told us he likes to go out to a Mexican restaurant with his family.
Jacob Hernandez explained that he likes to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month by going out with his family to restaurants, church, etc, and how he enjoys the many foods that are made during the celebration, and said that it’s important to him and his grandma.
