What’s AI???
AI or Artificial Intelligence is defined as a computer or machine’s ability to “think” (Nokia 2025). There are two types of AI type one is Narrow AI, General AI, and Super AI. Narrow AI is AI that is designed to carry out a specific task when asked. General AI is a hypothetical type of AI that possesses human-like cognitive abilities such as understanding, problem-solving, emotions, etc; super AI is basically the same thing (IBM 2023). Type two AI are things like self-driving cars and robots.
Student Interviews:
Dylan Cummings is a sophomore, and he said that because he uses AI all of the time, he is personally for AI. He said, “I’m for it because I use it all of the time.”
Payton Greenberg is a 10th grader. She stated that she was opposed to AI due to its environmental impact. She said, “I’m against it because it’s bad for the environment.”
Dani Ferguson is also a 10th grader, and she said that she is for AI because it can be handy. She said, “I’m for it because it can be useful.”
My opinion is…
I personally am not for AI because of its effect on the environment, so I use it as little as possible. While AI can be useful, it still has negative effects on the environment. For type one AI to be accessible to the public, engineers made AI data centers; AI data centers are specialized computing facilities with advanced cooling systems (IBM 2025). These facilities use fossil fuels and emit large amounts of carbon into the atmosphere. Their cooling systems waste about a 16-ounce bottle of water every time something is generated, depending on what you ask the AI to do. If you use a simple text prompt, it uses about 0.26 milliliters of water; an image generated can use 300-500 milliliters of water (Green Matters 2025). While this might not sound like a lot, hundreds of millions of people globally use AI, so it really adds up (Gallup News 2025).
