For incoming freshmen the unfamiliar and new aspects of high school can be stressful or overwhelming. Generally high schools are much larger than middle schools, with bigger class sizes and campuses. Peer pressure and social groups can be more present in high school than middle school which can cause students to fear not fitting in. Highschool does come with more extracurricular activities, sports, friendship opportunities and overall freedom compared to middle school.
What do THS students have to say?
Georgia Boerner (9th grader at THS) said high school is harder compared to middle school, and it’s similar to the stereotypes linked to high school. She said “even though it was what she expected it can be stressful at times.”
Sofia Gustafson (9th grader at THS) said she “likes high school more because she feels there is more freedom and more people to relate to.” She said “high school is kinda what she expected it to be, except she thought people were going to care more, but you can do whatever you want.”
Ava Kivela (9th grader at THS) said “high school comes with more freedom than middle school, and things are more up to you”. She said “high school is more stressful because it’s harder.”
Dakota McDonald (9th grader at THS) said “high school is more stressful because your grades determine whether or not you graduate”. She said she “likes high school more because in middle school, you couldn’t really go on your phones, but in high school, you can.”
High school wins!
It seems like most people are leaning towards high school being better than middle school, given the fact that high school has more freedom, relaxed device usage rules, and more people. Whether or not you share the opinions of these THS students is totally up to you! You may favor high school over middle school, middle school over high school, or simply not have a preference.
