There’s something new at Tumwater High School this fall. You have probably seen it and not thought twice about it– or perhaps, it’s the only thing you’ve been able to think about. And that’s the fence.
But why do we need a fence? Is it even necessary? Or is it something long overdue?
There have been mixed answers from students, but they mostly seem negative.
“It makes it feel like a prison,” says Audrey Hickman, a junior. “I don’t know the purpose.”
Other students agree, calling the fence pointless and annoying.
But the staff sees a different perspective.
Mr. Tucker states, “It gives a sense of protection. By seeing the fence, it will deter individuals that do not belong…to come on campus.”
When completed, the fence will completely surround our school, with a gate to further fortify the premises. After Christmas break, people coming onto campus will need a key to re-enter.
This could be effective… or irritating.
“It might slow someone down but then we’re all trapped here. What if there’s a fire? Are we supposed to jump the fence?” Kaylin Clark, a senior, expresses her concerns.
Some other problems are voiced by Mr. Suderman. “Given how the campus’s footprint looks, there’s no way it can be reasonably constructed to ensure all areas can be fenced.”
He also talks about the cost, which is another con of the fence.
“I don’t know yet…it’s full impact or cost benefit.” Mr. Suderman finishes.
No one really can know what all of the pros and cons of the fence are. But until then, be patient, and open to possible pros. It’s a big change! But change isn’t necessarily bad.
Overall, we need to stay unprejudiced! This fence has the potential to be life-saving. But only if we, as a student body, are receptive, cooperative, and patient.
