Have you ever heard people in the parking lot honking their horns for supposedly no reason and ever wondered why? Or maybe you even wonder what others think? You might assume it’s a feud between friends, or maybe a competition of who has the loudest horn. It could be a tradition passed on, or perhaps it’s just a few people messing around. You could think it’s too loud, maybe you hardly hear it, or you’ve never noticed. You may think it happens all the time, or hardly at all. Whatever you think, we might have the answer.
The honking wars were brought to my attention as I was walking with the journalism class-3rd period-and we heard people honking their horns, and my first thought was “why?” Well, I believe I’ve figured it out.
The question: “What’s your opinion on the honking wars?” got a nearly overwhelming amount of similar answers.
Willow Schwartz didn’t seem too impressed with the honking wars, saying that they, “can get a little annoying sometimes.”
She then elaborated upon that, stating that it was annoying, “only when it’s excessive.”
Willow was then asked why she had her opinion, she said that since she knows now that, “people do it for fun.”
On top of that she explained how she can, “get pretty annoyed by loud noises.”
Mrs. Schaake, being asked the same question, said that she thought it was, “annoying, but just harmless fun.”
“How often do you think it happens?” got a few different answers, but mostly fit into two categories: “Every day,” and “every few days.”

Our beloved Mr. Tucker said that it happens, “every other day in the mornings.”
Then added on saying that it was basically, “a domino effect” starting with someone honking and it just goes down the line.
Willow, however, said she, “thinks it happens a lot.”
She elaborated, explaining that, “it gets real loud out there.”
Cole Sanford said, “it happens maybe once or twice a week, mostly at lunch or after school.”
I mostly got the same answers for the question “How long has it been going on?” It opens the frame on if it was passed down for a while, or the same people.
“Probably since I started high school,” Cole stated.
He then went on to say how, “it sometimes starts when someone’s car alarm goes off.”
Mr. Tucker mostly had the same time frame, saying it was, “about when he started.”
Giving a numerical timeline of about, “four to five years.”
Mr. Tucker also stated that, “nobody’s gotten in real trouble, but they chilled out after being talked to.”
Upon being asked if she knew anything about the honking wars, Kaylin Clark said that, “it’s the same group of guys.”
Now for the moment you’ve probably waited for, “why does it happen?”
Mrs. Schaake said that the students probably think it’s, “fun to be annoying.
Mr. Tucker said that there’s probably no real reason and it’s just, “to be annoying.”
Willow said that she has, “no idea why it happens, and now I kinda want to.”
However, she added almost quizzically, “I guess people think it’s fun for some reason?”
Cole had previously said that he’s, “sometimes part of it.”
That he does it because he, “likes to honk at his friends.”
So, in conclusion, my “research” through interviews revealed that it’s been going on for a few years, that it’s mostly the same group of people, and quite a few people who aren’t a part of it find it obnoxious and a bit confusing. I hope that solved any questions you may have had about it, or even brought light to a new scenario that’s happening at our school.
